Star Wars Day | Bespin Luke is Home

Growing up there was one time that I became a Star Wars fan, but I didn’t see the movies on the big screens. I only saw them through the Betamax rental copy from a family relative who has them. I didn’t even see Star Wars in cinemas until The Phantom Menace came out and around that time it was the biggest thing ever.

The toys of course are what made the franchise partly known for. I never owned the figures, vehicles, or playsets. Well, until I was old enough to buy some of them. But I did own one figure in less than 24 hours. Unfortunately, it was stolen from me in the morning of 1983. It was Luke Skywalker in Bespin outfit from the Empire Strike Back that Mum bought at the Santa Ana Market and that was it.

Digital Library Reads | Star Wars (2015): Vol. 1

Star Wars changes the way we see science fiction films. It was a game changer that defined what we see about this theme about space adventures and battles not only showed explosions, but also well- written narratives about an ordinary farm boy who would become the savior of the galaxy. In three films it happened and with that popularity many tried and failed to emulate.

Lucasfilms expanded not only producing merchandise and toys, but also expanded the stories in other forms of media like in the comicbooks. Originally, Marvel published a series that follows the template of what happened in the films despite the inaccuracy of the characters appearance in the films. It expanded stories unrelated to what transpired in that trifecta that popularized the franchise.

By the time the 1990s rolled in Lucasfilms moved the publishing rights to Dark Horse to streamline and expanded what would be the Star Wars Universe introducing new characters and seeing what really happened off-screen as a definitive canon. But those things won’t stay permanent forever. George Lucas, the patriarch of Lucasfilms sold the company to Disney in 2012 and with that major changes happened dramatically.

Dark Horse ceased its very last publication of what everyone knew was canon connecting the movies and its comicbooks sometime in 2013/2014.

The Rise of Skywalker | Closing on a Good Note

12.21.2019 – The “Skywalker Saga” has finally ended and the most anticipated film next to Avengers: Endgame was already here. Everyone has very high expectations for this release, but personally I felt there was too much hype and mixed reaction that divided the fandom. Three months before it was shown in local cinemas in the Philippines there were communities that offered advance ticket sales.

It was the ‘usual’ thing in the Philippines since the movie has a limited run in December due to the annual MMFF (Metro Manila Film Fest) that focuses more on the local films released during the duration of the Holiday Season than foreign film. I’m one of the very few to be able to see it in cinema on 20 December 2019 and surprisingly got the ticket on the day itself through an old M-Pass card from Sureseats.com that I had registered eight years ago.

I didn’t purchase the ticket since the M-Pass account I had had enough points to get me a movie pass to see it less than the cost of what the pre-selling ones offered by local groups that organized the screening. It is more like getting invited in an advance screening again minus the commotion you seen in the red carpet.

Greenbelt 1 may not be as sophisticated as the other cinemas or even the one that hosted the special premier it was enough to witness how JJ Abrams wrap up the last chapter.

Pop Home | Han Solo & Greedo Shakers

05.20.2019 – There’s the Duel of the Fates and then there’s that discussion ‘Who Shot First?’ in Star Wars lore. But for those avid fans out there who cares? As long as there are movies that fuel the merchandise machine for Lucasfilms there’s plenty of those where it came from at that is where things get interesting.

Hasbro and previously Kenner have the action figure market dominated with the Star Wars toys.

But there are others too that build up the merchandise arm with that Funko has been churning up those Pop vinyl figures like it was flowing water that they never run out of iterations until they make it to your home with this…

Solo: A Star Wars Story | Does a Kessel Run

05.27.2018 – The Star Wars franchise continue to expand its live action films as well as their television, and other forms of media that encompass the galaxy from far away and with the addition of Solo it gets bigger.

Origin stories are no longer tall tales or half mentioned conversations they are now movies that bridge the gap. With Han Solo in the spotlight A Star Wars Story.

The Last Jedi | It Ended Before Awakens

12.20.2017 – By now you’ll probably have seen The Last Jedi in cinemas or you’re one of those fortunate bloggers I’m sure you’re selling it big time to see this film.

I’m actually holding back what I should be saying, but now I’ve seen it I’d say I’m practically half-impressed at the same time. Meh.

The Force Awakens is what brought everyone back to the galaxy from far away. Like everyone bedazzled I was as Yoda would probably say. But this one certainly is not channelling Empire Strikes Back like some who did a marathon the last 7 films.

Press Film Review: Star Wars The Force Awakens!

12.16.2015 – The Force Awakens gala premier in the Philippines was star-studded with personalities from television and the internet. From Stormtroopers to lightsaber wielding fighters you’ve got them all in one place.

That place of course is the IMAX in SM Megamall where they where playing John Williams musical score to the films as early as 6 PM and it can be heard at the Mega B section of the mall and it was great to be a Star Wars fan.

I'm Not A Star Wars Fan.

12.14.2015 – Do I really need to prove myself that I’m a Star Wars fan? Probably back in the day when Social Media was not invented at that time it only takes to see how enthusiastic a fan you can be.

But in this generation you don’t see that anymore and mostly you can see how that unfolds when most people you know weren’t even originally interested in it.

Well not until “The Force Awakens” arrive in cinemas less than a few days away.

The Phantom Menace in the Star Wars Press Media Gala Premier!

02.09.2012 – The star studded affair in the Philippine press screening of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in 3D was phenomenal. The weekend ends with a bang in seeing this film after 13 years. I recall buying movie tickets for the midnight screening with friends.

Back then I was so excited about the movie that most hardcore fans would turn this film down. I’m a casual Star Wars fan who only got to see the original trilogy for some in their 30s in video cassette formats of Betamax and VHS players. Episode 1: The Phantom Menace was the fourth film directed by George Lucas which definitely made this billion dollar franchise known globally.
