Movie Review: Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
The movie’s premise focuses on Walter Mitty an employee of Life Magazine who daydreams fantastic adventures. Photojournalist Sean O'Connell has sent a special photograph that he says captures the "Quintessence" of Life magazine and that it should be used for the cover of the magazine's final issue. Mitty works in the negative assets department, and has never lost a photo in his sixteen years of work at Life magazine, but negative 25 are missing. Using the other negatives as clues Mitty decides to go in search of Sean O'Connell and find the missing negative.
From the opening of the film the visuals were captivating as Ben Stiller’s Mitty in every scene. Walter is a sympathetic guy, but not as down of his luck kind of guy. He triumphs whenever things got difficult. His adventure is a puzzle that unravels in each scene where the audience is taken for a ride from taking the helicopter or trying to beat the odds on a zigzag road with his long skateboard.
What make this film interesting are the visuals that are imaginative whenever Walter gets “zoned out” in particular scenes. There are some that are not believable as you thought they may be. The narrative has its ups and downs that some parts veer you to its original objective. But then again it reels you back to find out what happens next.
Kristen Wiig’s Cheryl Melhoff is no typical character but it keeps Walter grounded moving towards to the climax of the film. At first Mitty appears to be some guy down out of his luck. But eventually his character is revealed an interesting one.
This is not Ben Stiller’s directorial debut having previously directed Tropical Thunder in 2008. He also co-produced this film with quite an interesting visual that truly captures the fell and identity of Walter Mitty. You call this film an epic adventure that gives you inspiration that each one of us has a secret life too.
Overall the Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a “fun” ride that contains the art style, which stands out on its own. What you’ll find in the trailers that would give you curiosity is his out of this world adventures in Green land, Ireland and Afghanistan. What surprises you is his interesting life growing up from his mom and younger sister.
The films gains a B+ or a grade of 4 out 5 which some who made earlier reviews to be mixed due to the parts that loses you in some scenes. But it gets back to its original focus to keep you on your toes as each scene unravels.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is already in cinemas and will make it screen debut in the Philippines on January 22, 2014 from 20th Century Fox which is locally distributed Warner Bro. Picture Studios.
