Ocean's Eight | Cleverly Underrated

07.25.2018 – There have been numerous heist films that has been adapted with diverse concepts, but there’s nothing like the original. The Ocean’s Trilogy changed the way you watch these types of film. It became commercialized that many had follow suit to produce their own heist movie.

With that you got to find something original worthy of the audience’s attention. Ocean’s Eight seems to be a refreshing look that spins-off from the trilogy. This time its features an all-women ensemble cast featuring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett leading a new crew.

This was a new take to expand the franchise and it didn’t disappoint with the same heist flavor, but with a different take that was led by the best and brightest women to make it happen which certainly not bad at all. Spin-offs are hard to pull off knowing it carries the same title of the original trilogy. But it doesn’t come down swinging as you’ve been used to with the original. Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock portrays Debbie Ocean, younger sister to Danny Ocean (George Clooney) leads the team to steal the most expensive jewelry at Met Gala in New York. It sounds like something you’ve probably heard about with the concept of the heist film.

Usually films now are written with a build-up and at the same time keeping the flow of the story interesting. Ocean’s Eight started really slow, but maintains not to elaborate with drama to keep you glued to every scene it throws at you. Every actor in the film had equal opportunity to shine from the moments they’ve been in the scene. By the time the third act has been building up it gives you that edgy tense of wondering what’s happening. Bullock, Blanchett, and Anne Hathaway certainly made a convincing performance with their characters. James Corden being known as a talk show host and have been voice actor to animated feature films has been an interesting character as Insurance Fraud investigator John Frazier.

You’re mostly focused on their main target, but things behind the scenes doesn’t reveal anything until it unravels more than what you have thought about. This one was rough around the edges keeping with the Ocean’s formula that made the trilogy successful. The stakes are higher than you ever thought possible and the chemistry with the actors certainly made you wanting to see more of their performance. Some might not agree with how this could be called a clever film, but it did deliver the right energy in finding this an interesting one to see.

The plot twists was interesting towards the end having not seen the entire run of the Ocean’s Trilogy doesn’t mean this one was not highly expected. Actually, Ocean’s Eight is underrated for being mostly incognito with a lot of films that came out at the same time. Some might think that you need to see the previous films to appreciate this one, but for someone new to the film you only need to see it this as for what it is.

Overall Ocean’s Eight is an underrated film but fully deserve of its attention as a continuation to the Ocean’s franchise, but with a refreshing cast and an interesting plot that definitely worth seeing in cinemas. If you’re looking for a good film that doesn’t need huge explosions this is the one worth catching up without the need to go back to seeing the original. But it certainly builds interest for find out what Danny Ocean was like and why Debbie’s family is an interesting band of thieves.
