Random Talks | Multi-Talented Spike Spencer

07.22.2018 – An American voice actor or actress’ career has been a job few have ever dreamt. Because off being the voice behind the characters they don’t need to be seen and appearance is not needed for this job. It has to be defining by talent not by how you look because inside the recording booth you have to diverse and very much talented to deliver the lines of the character given to you.

Spike Spencer is one of those talents who is diverse and can lend his voice to the character he needs to portray. He’s been in the industry for more than thirty years and as passionate as Spencer he’s living the dream of a voice actor ranging from animation to videogrames few have done and he’s here at AVCon 2018!

It’s rare to have encountered a very talented voice actor like Spike Spencer. These days voice actors who take on the voice of well known characters are mostly the Hollywood actors themselves. But they have limited range on who they can portray and it’s based in their character personalities.

Spike Spencer would be considered an underrated voice actor, but has a huge potential due to thirty years of voicing random characters from main to minor roles he has achieve quite a lot. The gracious Spencer was all pumped up for AVCon as his first trip to Adelaide South Australia with his wife and kid was definitely an experience he is currently soaking up.

There’s little is known about the characters Spike Spencer has portrayed except one major Japanese anime character as the English voice that definitely put him in the map that was praised by the fan community. This character was none other than Shinji Ikari the pilot of Evangelion Unit-01 from Neon Genesis Evangelion. He also provided his voice for other ADV Films’ Martian Successor Nadesico as Akito Tenkawa, and Excel Saga as Gojo Shioji. His career as an actor has put him in the map known for in the American releases.

Besides being known for voicing these Japanese characters he also have done commercials for Houston Cellular, Applebee's, Kroger, Chevrolet, and Subway. Though quite a talent in the recording booth he also did some additional acting in live-action films and in TV series such as The Big Easy.

He also a well travelled talent having been guests to numerous conventions all over the world and AVCon 2018 is his latest stop to meet his anime fans. He definitely shows his passion for portraying these memorable characters. He said that the biggest influence in his career was Mel Blanc that got him started in the industry. He did apply voicing other iconic characters, but the only one he dreams of stepping into the role someday is Scooby Doo, which he did a demo in this recorded interview.
