Cars & Coffee Blackwood | Morning Meet-Up

01.29.2018 – The car culture in South Australia is alive and thriving. If you’re into cars and anything that propel you to point A to B chances are you attend local car shows or private car meets in your country. Of course, the car meets in South Australia is interactive with their owners and enthusiasts sharing their stories.

There have been several car meets organized by passionate gearheads all over the state and each of these events are sometimes specifically themed to the brand or from the era, and sometimes from its country of origin. There have been quite a few stories here and there. But the most I’ve been was the Cars & Coffee at Blackwood.

Blackwood is one of the suburbs in South Australia outside downtown Adelaide with a good community in the surrounding areas with good business establishments ranging from the shopping centre to pubs and small restaurants. It’s the usual place you see in every province but modernized.

There it’s easy to commute if you know your way up to Blackwood, which majority of those going to the Cars & Coffee you may need to own a car to get around that part and rarely buses are operational on weekends while the trains are a bit of challenging to take since you need to take transfers from Adelaide to get to this place. Luckily, I have my fellow TAFE-mates who picked me up early in the morning that’s in-between from where they come from to our destination.

Cars & Coffee is a packed open to public event, which is loosely organized and held at the Blackwood Shopping Centre as early as at the crack of dawn to 7 AM they start to gather at the parking lot and by the time 10 AM the place has already wrapped up as the nearby Woolies opens its doors.

If this was in some third world country car meets are exclusive to private groups that are focused only to one car brand or model and not generally for public consumption, which is unlikely to have that narrow-minded concept in Australia.

Besides, this is the best place to get to know people in the motoring community directly and not just gawk at a car surrounded by stanchions and you need to pay at the door for the entry. This local gather is absolutely free and not the kind of saying ‘Free with Purchase’ that’s looking like a desperate marketing ploy.

I’ve seen a lot of cars here from the classic vintage to the modern supercar that you may or may not have in the streets. You don’t hear any criticism when you see sports cars pulling over and the first thing on your mind is if it was owned by a politician. Not here in Australia because everyone respects your lifestyle and employment regardless if you’re working at Maccas or working behind a desk there’s mutual respect. Because that is how South Aussies are polite, respectful, and terribly nice when they greet you in the morning despite being a stranger to them.

This is why the local communities like Cars & Coffee broadens your perspective and not think that despite having an expensive car you may think they look down on you. But the opposite happens when you get to meet a nice bloke that would humble you with his story how he/she restored his/her car or how they got into buying and owning their impressive dream machine.

At the end of the day it was quite an interesting experience to hear their stories or just appreciate the view of these fine machines. It also helps give you an inside look about being a student taking a course for automotive. It gives you discovery at the same time learning from those classes and not just sitting inside the room and just reading about the inner workings.

Cars & Coffee Blackwood is held every last Sunday of the month at the Blackwood Shopping Centre until the last car leaves before the local Woolworths supermarket opens its doors for their customers.
