Around Manila | Silence at the Bridge

01.14.2020 – The unexpected eruption of Tall Volcano has left Metro Manila covered in Ash, but not as far worse as the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo that left the country not only covered by its ash for almost a week it was also having dangerous health hazards due to the toxicity of the air that plagued everyone for months.

The aftermath for this one was not in major consequences, but most parts of Metro Manila have suspended all government offices and all levels in education on a Monday. Tourist areas in Manila were closed namely some parts of the walled city of Intramuros and Arroceros Forest Park as one of the locations that are not available for the public that leaves a somber week to start.

It is not to be compared to the worse situation Australia is going through right now. It just so happens majority of individuals in the Philippines sensationalize and overtly exaggerate the situation for their personal attention trying to influence most people to believing this is the worse time for the country that the facial masks sold in chemist or pharmacy stores has driven ’artificial’ demand for its price point.

This further making things worse for something manageable as the image of some parts in Manila appear to be musky and quite, but not as dire and desperate than those nearby the volcano itself. Monday was hectic and crowded but the mood is less enthusiastic as the LRT (Light Rail Transit) commute is in the ‘normal’ perspective.

The government operated facilities though that are open to the public are currently on a temporary on close down as above mentioned locations. But most of its entirety for commercial spaces it is still business as usual it’s just that the visual look of the places and locations appear to be monochromatic feel of emptiness.

Walking through Jones Bridges witnessing the normal commute by most vehicles is just the usual though you won’t see a volume of people standing on the side of the bridge taking photos or hanging out, while on my walkabout from Intramuros taking the underpass route through that pathway and taking the stairs to Jones Bridge at the back of the Manila Central Office seemed like the unusual look at the empty places. It is where the usual crowd tend to stay at the side of the river, but at this time past the lunch hour there was no one in the area though there’s a random vlogger trying to record a clip for her YouTube channel.

This day has so many challenges in some ways just observing the behaviour of people in the area and most homeless was seen in Intramuros as the stench of human feces or urine can be found nearby unexpectedly. This is just a start of the week of so many things as 2020 enters its second week that the world is going through a lot of things besides the volcano eruption, bushfires in Australia, and war brewing in the Middle East there’s too much that has happened in a matter of days.

The challenges get tougher from here and yet some tend to be ignorant and just throw their rubbish or spit in a random street somewhere. For those staying indoors please doo there are more challenges ahead whenever you are these images says a lot for the mood of Manila, for now.
