If you grew up reading comics or watching the current iteration of Transformers no matter if it is based from the Movie Series or recent animation you’ll only know Megatron as the villain to Optimus Prime, where most fans growing up after and 1990s would only knew this Decepticon Leader taking the form of a tank, jet, or even a frickin’ dragon.
Well if you disregard the last part as the dragon form is an alternate mode of another Megatron from Beast Wars, which has no relation to the Generation One version that they are only in relation by name to avoid the confusion.
Currently, there are many versions of Megatron the same with Optimus Prime. But the one version that sticks to mind growing up was Megatron from the original Transformers cartoon. He will always turn into a Walter P-38 UNCLE, which is based from that 1960s television show. He never was a tank or a plane that reduced the character to that form due to the laws with guns should not be toys in the first place. But being that the toy itself is from Japan the laws there are different.
Mega NERFirrific
From the 1990s iteration of Megatron in Transformers Generation 2 he was represented as a tank, which was explained in G.I.Joe in issue #139 as his first full appearance that form since there was no actual cartoon series supporting the toys that came out at that time. Since then Megatron was never gun anymore but military vehicles that is more suited to his personality.
But by 2006 when Hasbro introduced the Transformers Classic range for the first time in so many years the infamous Megatron returns in his original form as a weapon. To keep it more child-friendly he transforms in into a fiction hand blaster more like based from Nerf N-Strike Maverick blaster. The Classics version has more colorful theme homage to his Generation 2 colors.
This version however is released by Takara Tomy for their Henkei! Henkei! Toyline. This redeco from the Classic version features a significantly different color scheme of black, silver and red designed to make him resemble his original Generation 1 appearance, including translucent red plastic to replicate his classic cartoon "Decepticon red" eyes.
There are no difference to the toy mold and shares the same features with working crosshairs in his scope and a spring-loaded clicking trigger. Both version's "fusion cannon" is built-in to his lower arm that is articulated when transforming it back to blaster mode that turns into the gun's scope.
The only difference is the colors and translucent plastic replacing the green with more deep red. Since Japan has difference laws and regulation this Megatron doesn’t have an orange tip painted on the blaster’s nozzle, which is quite impressive making homage to the Generation 1 colors.
But this is just the second version from the Japanese release. The other iteration removes all the vacuum metalized chrome parts that feature an extensive silver paint job, as well as metallic crimson for details.
A Winged Megatron Form
Entirely, this Megatron is a shell-former when transforming this diabolical Decepticon Leader in to its infamous robot form. That’s the not-so good part of this figure, which shoots you down to make you realize this is not the Megatron you once knew. But it pays homage to his original form and that sticks out as a Voyager Class scaled figure.
The part that doesn’t feel like its Megatron because of the sides of that made up of his “Blaster Mode” becomes his wings like a Gundam. It’s such a pun right now that he turns into in a GUNdam and in robot mode the design aspects of those mobile suits have wings and it’s a bit hilarious. But it is better that he turns into a gun rather than the usual tank or jet concept, which sticks out in my personal collection.
Such Heroic Nonsense
Even though this iteration of Megatron is included in the assortment that is part of the first wave release for “War for Cybteron: SIEGE” it won’t replace THIS Megatron for its nostalgia. The SIEGE Megatron also carries nostalgia with its robot design taking inspiration from the classic cartoon, though longtime fans wish he would still turn into a pistol or a handheld weapon. But a Megraton that carries all the G1 nostalgia is good enough due to regulations it’s impossible to bring the character back to his original form for the mainstream and that’s where you save up for a Masterpiece Edition.
It’s still going to be fun wielding a Nerf-like blaster that turns into a dastardly Decepticon Leader. You can never go wrong having a kid-friendly alien weapon in your hands. Not like he can blast you with foam based projectile bullets, which it can’t (maybe from your imaginative mind) though Megatron in everyone’s thoughts is one sick sonuva gun.
