Random Talks | Inside Dr. Mike 2000's Mind

08.08.2018 – In today’s self-published graphic novels there are diverse creative individuals who made their own mark in the culture. South Australia is ripe for what could be the golden age of independent work thanks in part to Greenlight Comics support of the grassroots and cultivating creativity among the writers and illustrators.

There’s an abundance of original ideas out there that needs to be told. One of them is Mike Cooper better known to his pen name Dr. Mike 2000 who hangout for a chat at City Cross one fine rainy Monday afternoon.

He shares his beginnings and why he likes to tell psychedelic weird alien cultures.

Mike Cooper was not a comic book artist when he got into self-publishing. The chatty talented artist was more into video game design than most local artist in South Australia. His passion for comic books was not as grand as telling a story of a 12-part maxi-series about alien cultures in Universe Gun.

Though he shares that the first comic book has to do with Adam Warlock and the rest as shall we say was history. But his adoration for videogames was something he continues to do and that is admirable showing his passion for something people rarely notice. Universe Gun was something not just mind blowing, but something not most readers would immediately connect, but there’s a story there worth relatable to what Dr. Mike 2000 has gone through his personal life.

What makes his graphic novel something worth the look is how he crafted it through is creative mind of video game design. It’s a world building cultural phenomenon that is underrated for some and for most of Mike’s passion for telling a story its something of a personal entertainment that drives his creative juices to share that story.

Currently, Universe Gun has already released two graphic novels that are eight single issues that were previously released and his hard at work wrapping up the 12-part maxi series up to next year. He’s not yet done telling stories after Universe Gun and he’s still armed with a lot of narratives to share.

Mike’s passion for both videogame and comic books is not going to end there as he also mentioned a collaborative plan with Sandeson Gonzaga, a Melbourne based independent artist who did work also with the artists from the Hail series another original South Australian published work that is getting its own cult following.

Dr. Mike 2000 is not going to stop and will keep telling great stories that has been living in his mind have a listen to the audio interview (see embedded audio in this page) and check out Universe Gun available at Greenlight Comics.
