Knives Out | Sharp Intense Deductions

01.23.2020 – The whodunit murder mystery films are a rare breed theme, and for those who grew up with the board game Cluedo by the Parker Brothers one would recall that there was a film inspired from it that were shown in 1985 simply titled “Clue.” But Knives Out is something more and just like the above mentioned classic it also featured an ensemble of talented actors.

With this film it gives you that intense detective guessing from start to finish and for the reason why it was such a hit in other countries that it is still being shown in cinemas and has not yet to reach the streaming service like Netflix, Stan, or Amazon.

Rian Johnson may have divided the Star Wars community with his previous direction with The Last Jedi, but this surely is quite redemption in making this film entertaining to watch as actors featured flexed their repertoire at the same time the narrative itself was impressive enough that some people I knew have seen this twice during its run.

“Knives Out” was considered an underrated film when it was shown in some part of Southeast Asia, but with a list of well-known actors as part of the cast surely you’ll troop to the nearest cinema to catch and probably see it again and again. The appeal of this film certainly was impressive minus the grand that some movies carry.

The simple premise surrounds the death of Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) that was ruled as a suicide or is it? That’s when investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) steps in to find out as everyone from Thrombey’s family is a suspect of what could be a considered a murder. The only witness to this madness is Martha Cabrera portrayed efficiently by Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049, No Time To Die).

Of course, the suspect in question is in Harlan’s family from his daughter Linda Drysdale (Jamie Lee Curtis), her husband Richard (Don Johnson) or her playboy son Hugh Random Drysdale. This also includes Harlan’s son Walter (Michael Shannon) and his family as well as his late son’s widow Joni (Toni Collette). There’s going to be a long list of investigations and queries on whodunit. But at the end you’ll find out how the intensity is dialled up to eleven when Blanc deduces the real culprit.

Daniel Craig's finest moment yet with his performance as Benoit Blanc as making the character as his own with that texan accent. Being known not just an actor for that iconic character, but expands his performance in bringing this interesting personality defining Benoit Blanc.

This film is a welcome perspective for those who are getting the fatigue from seeing too many blockbuster movies. “Knives Out” was quite under the radar kind of movie that certainly deserving a Golden Globe nomination or an Oscar nod. Ana de Armas is the new ‘IT Girl’ for her performance as Harlan’s nurse and only witness to what’s really happening with every actor in this film portrayal as impressive as the narrative written by Rian Johnson himself.

Overall “Knives Out” is a murder mystery that is an original in itself with the plot twist and intense guessing on who was the murdered and certainly propels Ana de Armas to the mainstream with her performance where you can see her in other films coming in 2020 including the next James Bond film.

"Knives Out" was shown in Philippine cinemas in 27 November 2019 lasted for almost three weeks from Pioneer Films distributed by Viewers Choice in this country. Its also showing in Australia & New Zealand also on 27 November 2019 distributed by Studiocanal in Australia & New Zealand.

RATED: A+

NOTE: This film is still being screened publicly at Palace Nova Cinema in both Eastend and Prospect in the City of Adelaide, South Australia.
