06.12.2012 – The Rock of Ages based from the successful Broadway musical of the same name will finally hit theaters in a couple of days and the Philippine advance screening did not disappoint with invited guest dressed to rock the night away.
The film stars two young talents in Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough surrounded by the biggest stars in the film industry and if you want to see this… Please turn around as potential spoiler scenes might ruin the anticipation to see this film. If you still want to forego to reading this review then read this next details after the jump. |
The film opens just like a TV series introduction with Julianne Hough’s character traveling from Oklahoma City heading to Hollywood. The music never stops from their and she drops off the bus stop. Visually the whole Los Angeles Sunset Strip brings us back to the old 1980s nostalgia where Tower Records, Whiskey-A-Go-Go, Angelyne, and Frederick’s of Hollywood Billboard with the other landmarks.
The clothes and the hairstyle of glam rock was the height of its popularity back then and the production team who handled this did not disappoint in bringing it back to life.
Tower Records which has been closed in the US for several years was ever present on this film. Currently the only Tower Records’ physical store can be found in Japan. There where several product placements in this film and you won’t even notice it like the DMC-12 DeLorean which is parked in front of the Venus Club.
The actors each have a “singing spotlight” mostly the two main actors where the story revolves around in the film. The secondary actors in Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand’s characters almost stole the scene in this movie due to their comedic roles and a surprising revelation in the second or third act.
There where awkward moments that you’d like to stand get off your chair as I admit I’m not entirely into musicals save to Hairspray which also produced by the same team who brought you Rock of Ages.
Overall all of the actors showed that they have the voice to sing in this film and they have that talent in bringing these characters to life.
Rock of Ages opens in Philippine cinemas on June 14, 2012 nationwide from our friends at Warner Bros. Pictures!
