Aus Post | Inside Adelaide's General Post Office

08.11.2018 – Adelaide is a small city compared to the metropolitan areas in Melbourne and Sydney, but for anyone who has not lived in this place is an adventure awaiting for you to discover that you might not see in your home country. The city has the most heritage buildings that you might not notice on your daily tours.

One of these heritage buildings is the Australia Post’s general office building located near Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, which is also the structure with a clock tower, and just across that is another heritage building that is the old Treasury Building that is now known as the Adina Apartment Hotels. Both buildings are already historical landmarks, but the Aus Post’s general office building stands out for its design.

Built-in the period from 1897 to 1872, the architecture was the result of an architectural competition won in 1866 by local architects Edmund Wright and Edward Woods. Their design was subsequently modified and the freestone classical building was opened in 1872 with great celebration.

The General Post Office building features a clock tower named the Victoria Tower and was the tallest building in Adelaide into the twentieth century. It was a significant public building for Adelaide when it was built and continues to function as a post office and a city landmark for over 140 years later.

The General Office Building

You can see the building immediately with that familiar clock tower with the flag as modern buildings have already surrounded this once proudly built structure. The images taken here were taken sometime in February of this year and had better weather during the summer season with the rest of the images are closer shots that include the interiors and just about when you step out of the building.

The Victorian Clock Tower used to be the only one standing back in the day, and it is updated in real-time whenever you are in downtown Adelaide this one helps to keep your time if you don’t wear a wristwatch with you or you don’t use your mobile phone to remind you of the time.

Interior Building Perspective

Inside the building, you can see that it is not just a post office receiving mail and parcels, but it has its retail store and a self-service for paying bills among other things that continue to be relevant, unlike other old post office services outside Australia that are still limited to just doing the same service they offer.

The walls and the ceiling are kept in pristine order as being a heritage building this was certainly taking you back to the old days. Not that sending mail is outdated and about to become nostalgia. But the way enter the building you get that feel of the way it was being kept and no modern changes were made except for the CCTV and other security features that keep the building secured.

Visiting this place is quick as I have very much limited time to even look around and see more about the building. But it is a heritage building inside and out, which is not just a façade like most of the old buildings in other countries built in Asia. I’ve seen it whenever I’m in the area of Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, since going around the city of Adelaide the first thing I see is this place and surely it is still in good hands of the state government for keeping it just the same as it was built a hundred years ago.
