The Upside | Odd Pairs of Friendships

01.26.2019 – Movies that are inspired from actual events or true story is a hit or miss. Sometimes it surprises you how these films real it hard with reality and definitely find inspiration to the viewer who needed motivation the most, but sometimes it’s more than just entertaining at the same time finding its way to be that interesting.

“The Upside” is one of those films that play it straight at the same time making you laugh for its simple but benign scenes. It features an interesting cast in Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, Julianna Margulies, and Nicole Kidman rounding up the leads.

The film is based from the French produced hit “The Intouchables” with a minor difference in the setting it tells much of the narrative follows a paralyzed billionaire who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a recently paroled convict whom he hires to take care of him. It was in production way back in 2017 and had release limited dates in late 2018 in selected countries.

I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the articles surrounding this film and its trailer while seeing "Glass" a week before. Originally, I was planning to watch “Once upon a Deadpool” but seeing that film has more limited release and most cinemas in the Philippines is generic to limit the choice of movies to see I decided upon seeing “The Upside” to suit one casual moviegoer’s curiosity.

Odd Pairings of an impressive Chemistry

Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart in one movie is an odd pairing in the making of something a lab experiment that the producers have concocted that was brilliant. Kevin Hart is a whole different actor in this film that used to be more thought out as a screeching loudmouth that reinvents itself into a serious actor and is impressive banters between Cranston makes this a rare treat of good vibes.

Cranston is also a great actor in this film as a paralyzed billionaire certainly plays out with all the accolades for his memorable Walter White in Breaking Bad adds this one role to give him high praises that certainly gives you want to root for this guy. There’s not much to say but good things about this movie that is purely underrated in the general public to definitely appreciate the little things in life.

Life Changing Inspirational Laughs

For the banters between Cranston and Hart you still have Nicole Kidman on a supporting role to think you’ve seen her enough portraying Aussie accent speaking characters in this one you’ve got Yvonne Pendleton who much a straight arrow friend and assistant to the paraplegic Phillip Lacasse. But you’ll still get to hear her Aussie accent if you pay so much attention.

But Kidman is still splendid with her scenes with the leads. Despite the low-key performance and the oblivious cliché of the narrative it does quite entertain masterfully how The Upside fairs though I haven’t seen “The Intouchables” this personally stands on its own perspective. Even though both actors positive chemistry not taking its full advantage it still holds up for what it was giving us their portrayal to these characters. Noting how Kevin Hart can be a serious actor was entertaining to watch.

Despite the predictable story, you can never down a good simple film for those who just want to sit back and enjoy for once. “The Upside” may not be as bold as its original predecessor but it still gives you quite an inspiration in seeing those odd pairings can give you that rare chemistry in this film.
