Caravan Pop Up | Night Market Finds

When you hear pop-up stores, they are shops that do not have a permanent location. Mostly, a small business that only exists online or simply has the business for a season, since they might have an actual day job. It’s been a common practice that most pop-up shops in the modern day are a table set-up inside a shopping centre or an event they are participating in year in and year out.

But there are pop-up caravans that travel all over the region through rural areas that participate to be part of the town fiesta. Some of them don’t even carry named brands or licensed products. Like most stores in the province, they sell affordable items ranging from housewares, tools and even some random toys for kids to play with.

Due to the recent events in Davao Oriental, the town fiesta in Kinablangan was silently cancelled, and scheduled activities are no longer being held. But the participating pop-up caravan will be taking space around the area until October 18th, which is the day the town fiesta wraps up.

They are originally the stores to lead up the Night Market during the course of the town’s annual celebration. This was supposed to be considered be celebration until the earthquake happened, and things slowly quieted down. But no matter if there are no scheduled activities, the sellers will be around until the last day.

Generic Kind of Fun

There are some interesting finds in this part of the night market that most would immediately shout, “Knock-Off!” Because some of them are, but not entirely, as some toys are completely an oddity. But most of the stuff you will find is not as appealing as that who are already exposed to high-end branded toys… Or should I say collectibles, that this stuff is nothing to them.

But if you grew up owning plastic random toys since you can’t afford them back in the day, you will have that kind of affinity to having a simple childhood because your Mum got you something whenever she went off to buy vegetables at the local market, and she got you something out of left field, because they were part of your youth.

The Oddities and Finds

In some way, it triggers your childhood, how simple things were, and how they were just as enjoyable as the ones you can afford now as an adult. Some of these toys are just pure fun if you still remember how to “play with them” and not end up being mint on card or in a glass display because “fun” means investment to you.

But if you are living in a remote place where no access to the current thing in the market, these were a delightful trip down memory lane, not because they were part of your childhood, but because you know how to appreciate the simple things that very few people don’t see behind the “hype” and “resale value” that they have.

Those who don’t see that must not have had a good childhood, but let’s not get overly factual about today’s perspective on ‘having fun.’ Those who get it, you know your roots, and with that, today’s acquisition is something a sibling would like to remember, having played it in the rain that was pouring out.

Personally, the ball would be something Indiana Jones would like to get away from, and the colourful things that came with it remind me of the ones that were put on the beach to prevent a landing in World War II as a defensive barricade. Something I just had imagine today, since the plastic Little Green Men need some adventure to go through obstacles, and they are those things.
