Points to Ponder | Small-Scale Fire Incidents

Waking up in the usual routine, and going through the same grind that’s a typical morning day. There were blaring sirens and fire engines making noise in the other street. It was alarming to think it might be just the annual Fire Drill that most offices in Makati City are doing as other establishments have been doing to prepare for the force, but nothing prepared me for this day.

It was almost lunch already, and there have been so many things on my plate. Like everyone in this country, most people would just continue to ignore what’s happening around them. But I’m not “most people” who would pretend I’m wearing horse blinders and choose to black out my perspective as my eyes are open.

But recent personal events have been quite a handful to even notice a fire happened earlier. This type of news would have been headlined through other social media platforms, but they treat it as a small incident when lives are at stake. The calm and quiet crowd clearly shows that the events happening was merely nothing more than a tiny incident compared to major fires in Metro Manila that mostly don’t make it in the news.

This sort of ignorance still should be important regardless if the fire brigade has contained the fire immediately. This is the problem with media in the country where Metro Manila is overly congested in population, and there’s not enough room for incidents like this gets pushed away because ‘it wasn’t sensational’ enough to merit immediate attention to society in general.

Despite a small case of disaster, people should know about this news. It’s not small when human lives are at stake. It’s the images of 20-30 fire trucks lined up supplying gallons of water connecting with other small-time volunteers to put out the blaze.

We can talk about the increase in densely populated areas, and then when a national election comes those sorts of “putting attention to the provinces are nothing but empty promises of what actual growth when the obvious truth is the government only wants from their citizens are just two things: Your Money and Your Vote.

This vicious cycle with continue again and again until we’re gone and this blog spot is nothing more than just a part of this sentence because the Philippine Government is nothing more than a Corporate that does not care for the little things because it does not affect their livelihood. Period.

Its blunt ignorance will continue until someone takes this issue right to the government’s head and dropped it on them like a 30-kiloton nuclear bomb to make them realize money may keep their pockets full. But small fire incidents like this are far more important as an issue as they keep ignoring the growing population will definitely put one of the biggest cities Metro Manila in serious jeopardy.

There are reasons why there is a department called Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in Western countries like Australia to make sure every building or establishment is following protocols and conforming at same time adhering to major emergencies. Not just conducting fire drills and making sure Safety is a concern, and big or small fires must be accounted for as important as saving lives.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFA) in the Philippines is not like the ones I’ve seen while living in Adelaide. The department is not just a name, they really have the State Government’s support in upgrading their gear, but also making sure the State of South Australia gets enough support that small incidents that easily get contained are not just an afterthought.

In the Philippines, everyone is an afterthought unless you’re a celebrity or a personality for the reason people “wants to be famous” or known because the influence of wanting to be important is only applied to a select amount of people wanting the spotlight and when tragedy comes they are most important.

But the rest are just a casualty waiting to be collateral damage to reduce population, and replaced by a new set of bodies who can give the government their income when things happen again. This vicious cycle happens because nobody even cares anymore and the ignorance continues.

This is nothing more than a small-scale incident, and just because the fire broke out and got contained it’s no news to be talking about. Just like it happened to other places in the Philippines would it be a crime or fire that doesn’t deserve immediate attention people need to know, but people in this country easily forget and move on to the next best thing talking politics and making it their reason to be talked about.

Another vicious cycle to go around with no importance. Pure and simple.
