MELÄG | A Whimsical Realm

12.06.2018 – There are so many independently published books in the Philippines that is rich in culture as well as told by the author inspired from their childhood.

Rarely, you see physical books highly appreciated and sometimes unseen due to popular opinion that going digital is the final frontier when it’s about reading. But the truth is buried by constant wave of raves through social media that often dictates how things should be. But for some who have a wide view of the little things that matter the smell of a newly printed book when you flip the pages and seeing the art is entirely different from the LED powered touchscreens.

In the case of MELÄG a compilation of short stories published by Bong Redila from his previously released works is quite an eye opener that leaps through you and shares his tales from his childhood that inspired them that are the simple things in life growing up in a province.

This is a thick book that tells a lot of stories based from his childhood to his daily experiences growing up. It’s entirely a silent comic that lets you think and admire his artistry. Each chapter is a treasure trove of details down to the inks that captures the bountiful and innocent narratives that defines this book.

MELÄG takes you to a fictional place that lets you forget the dreary days of reality. When you read and figure out each story it makes you forget the time and transports you to that world that is entirely something to admire without even the need to express them verbally. The innocence of children living in hardship that only wants the simplest things in life that reflects the harsh reality of a family living under the bridge is real. The images scribbled by Redila hits hard that can make you realize having acquired material things is nothing more than a facet of what have become.

The dreams of flying are evident that everyone can be associated in one of its chapters. The well-detailed blimp that takes up two pages of the book gives you the extravagance wanting to live in the skies is greatly an inspiration concocted in the mind of the author. It’s so way out there trying to find answers in these impressive tales of simplicity.

You’ll appreciate every page and the deep rooted Filipino (Tagalog) language that Bong speaks through the chapters giving explanation about his humble beginnings. It is truly patriotic at heart with the life he had growing up given the language he speaks in this book. It makes you feel more appreciated about the culture of the country where he is from even though he now residing overseas. Truly, remarkable about every bits and pieces of the book from the quotes that was shared by other authors who have known Bong gives you more reason why MELÄG is a charming read from cover to cover.



It is definitely a labour of adoration when he compiled the well-detailed pages of his works originally produced in self-published material from 2010 to 2014. During this past weekend Bong was present in the one-day event by Adarna House featuring the artists and writers that also have their works under the Anino imprint. Several books was available this was Bong’s last stop after Komikon then a brief visit with his family in Guam that followed this event before flying back to Miami.

This is one of the best complimented books advised for Children to read and it holds true for its content. It’s also an award winning title that is entirely a silent comic with very little English and deeply written in Filipino highly regarded that everyone will appreciate.
