12.13.2018 – Independent comics or ‘indie comics’ has grown to be a popular medium to express their thoughts, personal life, and, their artistic desires to share a good story.
Comics, in general, is something that can’t be translated in movie or television it has restrictions and also something that can’t be made in another form although limited it has something that is unique when it's about storytelling. With “Takeout” the meaning at first glance the thoughts would be about food that you order in a restaurant to go or in British term that is ‘Take Away.’ But the cover which was designed by interior artist Borg Sinaban gives you a different kind of vibe. Indie Comics has grown to just about a simple slice of life but based on the culture that is happening in the Philippines. Some would express their thoughts that they can’t verbally say instead they show it through the comics they produce away from the mainstream populace that generally see the usual themes. But not like these types of works independently produced by the writer and artists. |

“Takeout” may have connotations of a double meaning but in this comics form, it gives you the setting and what it really meant. Mikey Jimenez who also wrote the graphic novel “Sandali” makes this one-shot story express itself and show you what is really happening in this country. The subject of EJK (Extra-Judicial Killings) as one of the major elements of the narrative it hits home about the things people don’t see every day that would change their lives if it happened in front of them.
Borg Sinaban’s art blends well as more mature from his work on on the Pilandok Series of Children's books with Jimenez’s dark short story elevating the truth about these unregistered killings. A simple story set in the small town in Pateros, which has been one of the places that have a very high death count in the last two years. This story reflects what harsh reality can happen to anyone.
It’s a very dark story based on what is happening in that place but in general. For some people would ignore about it and treat this as something to just readable material. But the message comes across that as long as it doesn’t happen to anyone you know it will not be relevant to your everyday. Mikey Jimenez and Borg Sinoban have crafted this short story that hits a chord to be aware and vigilant\t every day.
Overall “Takeout” is a Filipino language comic not just about taking food out. It really hits what is happening to reality nowadays as told in the form of a short story that reflects everyday life is thought to provoke. If this happens close to home like inside a fast-food restaurant or anywhere for that matter what would you do?
Some would just ignore this as a carefully crafted work of art, but it is for what it is that really reflects the truth and its culture.
“Takeout” a short story by Mikey Jimenez and Borg Sinaban with the cover price of ₱100.00 pesos was sold at the one-day event by Adarna House last 30 November 2018 at Gateway Mall.
