Aquaman | A Redeemed Hero
When Jason Momoa took the role of Arthur Curry/Aquaman appearing in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice his characterization was edgy driven alcohol drinking superhero which didn’t sit well with the fans. His evolution started changing when the character appeared again in Justice League along with Lady Mera, who was protector one of the Mother Boxes that was given to Atlantis to keep that was taken by Steppenwolf for his own means that was stopped by the team.
The setting for Aquaman was a year after the said film, but little was discussed towards the film. This now focuses on Arthur Curry’s origin where he came from and how he became to be that edgy superhero.
Visually, James Wan known to direct fast cars and horror genre took the challenge in giving us what the world of Atlantis is all about. It is impressive and obviously it was heavily CGI in terms of simulating what the world under the ocean will be like if there is this fictional world became a reality.
It is over the top but truthful to the concept how the world of Atlantis looks like and it is certainly an impressive effort for the creative team in making things work despite these challenges. What makes it difficult to appreciate about this film is the narrative, pace, and some point a bit of a drag. Not everyone would just sit there more than two hours and fell like they just sat there only for a few minutes.
The deep dive to the characters mythology fills up those two hours it might not be perfect, but it is engaging with Jason Momoa inhibiting the character in redeeming fashion. Amber Heard is not just your Lady Mera in distress she is a hero on her own kicking bad guys in the face. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II who portrayed Black Manta was an interesting tragedy that made this character interesting. Now fans are taking notice about this live action interpretation why this was Aquaman’s worthy adversary.
Entirely, the cast has well done making their characters believable but difficult to go through their dialogue. James Wan made the effort in making this a fun film to watch despite the length of seeing it as with the troublesome pace that makes you realize how deeply entrenched you’re going to be in the next few key scenes.
It’s a good film that follows Wonder Woman’s success from 2017. Jason Momoa is a likable guy on and off screen which Zack Snyder certainly found the right man for the job in portraying this underrated character in redeeming him to the next generation of fans it’s only the beginning for the DC Extended Universe to get back in the game one film at a time which looks promising moving forward.
“Aquaman” is visually impressive and character driven origin story that dives deep to the mythology of who he is and what is his destiny that define the next iterestion of the DCEU films to come.
It’s now playing in cinemas globally as it was showing in the Philippines starting on December 12th, while being shown in Australia December 13th, where you can also find other dates in your country HERE. It’s distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros Pictures and Village Road Show in Australia.
