Road Trip Nowhere | Port Germain & Beyond
Breakfast was crucial part o the day, but the plans always gets thrown out of the window when the itinerary was to get up at 7 AM have prepare meals and then head down to the showers before going off to the next destination. Sometimes the discipline works but most of the time its random plans, but still staying on the course.
For this group it was a slow moving morning but personally I was up and about ready to have breakfast to get ready for the trip. I had brought food enough for the this travel and some where kind enough to share theirs that I appreciate the gesture.
Unwelcome Visitors
While everyone is trying to get up from their cold slumbers there were birds that have been either annoying or quite weird. You got three horses hanging out with you in the thick of the night and then you get birds preying on your food. I’m not sure what type of birds they were but it gives me the vibe that I felt like having a “Spider Sense.”
Everything in this trip is a first time for everyone namely yours truly. This morning was practically was one for the books as some leftovers from last night was fried along with the hunk of meat they brought in as breakfast for the day.
I’m practically cheap having bought only cup noodles and economically need only hot water. It was sort of a morning picnic as the rest pack and folded the tents we slept in. I rolled the burrito sleeping bag back to its small size. The ladies prepared their things while the guys loaded u their vehicles until it was half past 10 AM.
Breaking Camp Rules
You know there are camp ground rules when you go to this sort of place. I only found out about the rules in one of the vehicles. Though it looks hilariously funny its really a serious matter finding out that the first rule in this camp is not to cut down the branches of the trees as the management have alternatives.
There’s a valid point why the guys had to do it since it’ll cost them an extra $30.00 AUD to spend on wood that can easily be cut down to a ‘live’ tree. This group not to see a camp inspector in the area or everyone will get into trouble. But honestly its still breaking the rules and its funny one of the women knows how to hide the evidence.
Short Trip to Wilopena
Overnight stay in at Willow Springs and then we headed down to parts unknown to me, but the rest of the seven people in the group they had an idea. Wilopena was the first one that I thought would stick since I can’t understand Chinese I just leave it to them where they’ll be going as I’m sort of an observer in this trip.
Wilopena is a big place too but we didn’t stay that long and they had to spend more for the entrance for some parts of the area. Its awfully a huge area that you van go camping too, but we already have our fill of experiencing it last night.
So the short stay has given us some look of the heritage and interesting things about this place. It was a bit of a rest too for the drivers on this one as they discuss what’s the plan which I practically no idea so I leave it at that.
A Beach Closer than you think
The next plan was to find the beach that has the closest parking next to the sea. I’m sure there’s no such thing as that place. So drive off and my young ward and yours truly had to take the driving and navigation as our designated driver and his companion take a quick rest.
On this road trip we left the Camry twice as it struggled chasing the tow SUVs and I already know the next “off-job” back to TAFE this car will get some serious wheel alignment not to mention new set of tires as I see the surface has been scraped so hard you can no longer see the thread.
Prior to our next destination the guys had to clean their filters with thick dust from the hours of travels. You’re in good hands when you have a mechanics with you in this trip they practically are handy companions when they know its going to be a rough road out there and they’re pretty much conscious avoiding engine trouble.
Port Germain to the End
Through getting lost and ending up in a lake to heading to Port Germain it was really a road trip to nowhere. Sure, there’s this hipster vibe that its ‘cool’ to get lost and at the same time not-so cool when you don’t have a proper itinerary. But entirely this trip was an interesting experience just being in the passenger seat.
Port Germain was interesting too being one of the places with the longest jetty as back in the day ships usually stop in this place as history is written and posted in the area. I could barely reach the end of the jetty when I have to get one of the guys who went fishing in the edge. I only made it beyond the halfway point as he was coming back while the sun slowly sets down.
The group had one last meeting and quick barbecue as things started to get dark already. I was hoping we’ll leave the place at 7 PM according to one of the guys but we end up leaving almost 8 PPM and had to have a quick stop at the petrol station.
Learning Experience
I can’t say it was good or bad experience towards the end, but it was also a lesson learned that things don’t work out the way you have thought, but at least I got home way past midnight safely as both of my phones had died even before we reached Adelaide as my powerbank was severely exhausted.
This tri had given me a place to take a deep breath and find a quiet place away from the things I have been experiencing the past months. It was a getaway to have a minor reset, but there also some parts I surely can’t say was good or bad. Overall it was a rare treat to take the road probably next time I hope to be more prepared than just another guy in the passenger seat.
