FCBD 2022 | A Subtle Comeback

Local events have slowly been happening all over Metro Manila. When all hope have been lost, and the least you expected it did happen in its most subtle way. Free Comic Book Day in the Philippines just happen in the month of June 2022 is the most little likely event that everyone thought that was already done. But just like that, an announcement was put up on social media two days prior by local book shop giant Fully Booked has organized their event. It might not be the most eventful it still sent a message to everyone that FCBD is back, and this is was like back in 2009 when they did have this event minus the wild activities.

Free Comic Book Day was an annual event that is celebrated every first Saturday in the month of May, but due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, all related events and public gatherings in the country were halted. Most event organizers had to adapt to different means of still putting out ‘an event’ minus the human interaction, which made “Zoom” an immediate go to software to communicate. FCBD of course was canceled, but Diamond Distributors who publish the titles that are supposed to be given away have continued to produce the titles and they were distributed every week from July to September. In the Philippines, it was a different story and amidst that cancellation, you’ll find the ones who really supported the stores.

FCBD 2013: The Wild Perspective

05.05.2013 – The stories at Free Comic Book Day had a huge impact on a lot of people. Now it depends what kind of individuals think of the annual event that started with Comic Odyssey and with Fully Booked in 2008. Arguably the best single event when everyone got the chance to take some comic books home absolutely FREE. But what makes this event so big in the Philippines that a lot would line up as early as 1AM just to get first dibs on your favorite title? Everyone all over the world knows it’s a promotional event to bring old and readers but there are others who completely don’t know what it really meant to some who just appreciate meeting new people.

Free Comic Book Day by Fully Booked

05.23.2009 - Every year this event is slowly becoming a tradition that Diamond Comics Distributors would support in collaboration with local and comic book shops internationally. On a yearly first Saturday month of May, random free comics will be given away from selected shops participating this year. For this year, the worldwide celebration was held on May 2nd. But one bookstore made their own rules from the annual said date this is due to their own schedule of the books arriving late. Actually, this is the second time since participating last year that they did it, and that was two weeks after the original FCBD Celebration. Unfortunately, Fully Booked store, who gave away random diverse of comic titles earlier can only give One Per Customer as they only got a small amount books for their walk-in customers. But seeing all the plethora of titles splattered in the table shows there are potential to bring in new readers to their store. The colorful artwork with attractive character faces, who would like to read a free comic book today? Surely, this is certainly another event that has been happening in some parts of the world, and clearly it's going to be bigger in the next few years. It is certainly something to look forward to.
