Sunday Bazaar | Local Hobby Meet

02.19.2019 – In the Philippines there’s a rarity when you talk about weekend markets. Most of this gravitates to being held at open spaces like football field, local city parks or an empty parking lot. These mostly relates also to more about food sellers or farmers catering their hard earned organic fruits and vegetables. There is also merchandise being sold like clothes and little trinkets or souvenirs.

But an overall weekend market is not a regular thing if you reside in a city like Metro Manila. There’s not much open space or even greenery to be that ever sustainable to promote a community that would be ever supportive in a consistent basis to that. But there are other things weekend market in the Philippines doesn’t namely relate to the hobby like toys and collectibles.

When I was living in South Australia weekend markets or mostly Sunday Market is where you meet random polite faces notably Aussies who greet you in the morning. In the city of Makati there’s no such thing or for the entirely of the Philippines for that matter. There are weekend markets happening Makati which are held at Jaime C Velasquez Park (Saturdays) and the open parking lot near Legaspi Active Park (Sundays), which mostly focused on vendors that sell food or farmers selling their organic wares that you can see in the morning.

It’s not like a general market like the Marion Market that’s held every first Sunday of the month, where from antiques, toys, old records, and other things are being sold there. Besides the fruit and vegetable vendors you see there are food sellers too. That’s how a weekend market in South Australia happens not selective of what is being sold there even though these types of gatherings is happening in a state territory it’s a diverse type of market where you see random things during its scheduled event.

I’ve been to most of the Marion Markets but never the ones held at Brighton. I only go to this market just to see the antique and toy sellers, which is like a stroll down to nostalgia that the weekend markets in Makati doesn’t have. But there’s one Sunday Market that I passed by a couple times recently at random either on the way to somewhere or heading back that was held at Akipelago, a lifestyle food crawl which is also an entertainment area having a stage for bands performing weekly up to Saturday.

This recent Sunday I passed by this Toy Bazaar where a group of small toy sellers have bunched up tables having their wares on display. From what I see it they’ve started selling at Arkpelago since 12 January 2019 dubbed also as “Latagan Sunday” (Loosely translated as “Sunday Spread”), where sellers and toy collectors have their swap meet. Most of these sellers have the usual Funko Pop figurines or diecast Hot Wheels and Matchbox toy cars.

There are some interesting action figures too. Besides that there’s one also selling shirts and other merchandise aside from the usual toys you see here. It’s informally organized group of toy sellers that you don’t see in other places and it’s a novelty that a hobby market ever held on a Sunday. This might be a good thing for community groups to promoting the hobby at the same time a social event that’s not limited to online gatherings that’s usual lately.

The next “Toy Bazaar” is happening on 24 February 2019 at 11 AM up to 6PM at Arkipelago and its FREE Entry, where you can find this HERE!
