Digital Library Reads | Black Widow (2016)
Published: 10 October 2016
Age Rating: Teen
Language: English
From the opening pages kicking some SHIELD operatives to jumping off Helicarriers, the former KGB turned SHIELD Agent and Avenger must deal with her past actions at the same time trying to find the truth behind the Weeping Lion who has found her secrets that he plans to expose to the public.
The first issue itself features Natasha breaking out on her motorcycle that even inspired an action figure and that interesting motorbike into a Marvel Legends set that certainly giving you the reason why she’s not just an Avenger in black skin tight sexy costume, but a deadly skilled former Red Room operative for KGB.
Chris Samnee delivers something new and reinvigorating the character’s aesthetics in how skilful the Black Widow with an action spread featuring some elaborate and well-detailed chase scenes as well as fight sequences that only readers can imagine if it was adapted in animation or live-action film. Mark Waid has written super powered beings and heroes that uses skills, but never in a genre of spy action. This is collaboration worthy to continue to other Marvel comics properties now that Waid is presently scribing Doctor Strange with a different artist.
The style and aesthetics of this series has 1960s feel as Iron Man’s armor doesn’t too sleek but adapts the classic look that most have been familiar with while incorporating state of the art technology that you see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though the finish line of the first story arc seems to give a slightly dud crescendo you can appreciate how it unravels who was the Weeping Lion and it certainly was a surprise wanting you to check if Volume 2 has the same level of intense that carries over to the next series and surely it doesn’t hold you down but gives you to follow suit.
Overall SHIELD’s Most Wanted was like lighting the match from that Mission Impossible opening from the classic television series and the explosion was the reveal who was the Weeping Lion. It certainly holds up the action and intense pages how Natasha gets more humanized besides being a skilled protégé of the Red Room while the entirely of her narrative is just one part of a bigger story that delves into the second volume if you library has it!
