Doctor Strange is quite an oddball character for a superhero comicbook, but Marvel seemed to get everyone on board for someone who wields magic and sorcery.
Honestly, I’m not a fan even though I’ve seen the live-action film starring Benedict Cumberbatch as I’m more into the street level type of superhero. But the oddness of Doctor Strange still draws curiosity since it also covers supernatural. Recently I picked up a copy of the latest series with Dr. Strange: Surgeon Supreme as the status quo of the character has changed more aptly a perfect storm for new stories due to the change on the dynamic as his hands were finally healed that was told in the previous series. This got me more curious on that story as I went to hunt down that back issue and finally found one at Comic Odyssey in Robinsons Galleria. Actually, it was the very last one that I have to get it. Though numerous online outlets has finally reviewed the comicbook sometime last year it is worth noting this issue is sort of a ‘game changer’ for the character since Stephen Strange’s origin in becoming the Sorcerer Supreme was the result of a car accident that destroyed both his hands to seek a cure for it, which ended in becoming the protector and the last line of defence against all manner of dark sorcery. |

This issue’s significance was very much well-written and Doctor Strange being the Sorcerer Supreme he is very much human in matter of perspective and how the story was driven with pace that the visuals is quite intense aching in comparison in a television series with this sort of episode. Of Course, no Marvel character is an archetype that Dr. Strange is very much human in the situation in this issue.
Mark Waid was on top form writing this issue while Jesus Saiz provides the artful visual that speaks volumes on the characters and their emotions at the same time dealing with the challenges they faced. It was a perfect storm in some way how things put together when Dr. Strange has no other option in saving a boy’s life. It was really a “Choice” he has to take that changed the character’s major status quo that brought me to picking up the most recent series a few weeks back. Although that series was hyped due to this issue and left quite a reaction this one was different.
Since reading that first and getting to read this after has given the character a point of clarity that Stephen Strange has really changed as what driven him from becoming the Sorcerer Supreme was also a life lesson and thought him the value that the pre-Dr Strange lacked which was depicted in the live-action film. It would be a long ways to go in adapting this narrative, but like all chosen path there’s consequences.
In this story Stephen’s choice to save the boy’s life and having both his hands restored will open up new stories, but also have that lingering consequences not only in the character’s minds but also those who followed the series. The new series is just about to start dealing with his now current predicament. But this issue certainly gives a new look on the character how he’s going to deal with the new found situation moving forward and it is also an interesting read and now I know why.
