The expansion of Mr. D.I.Y. in the Asian region alone signifies that it can be an international brand, which originated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It can compete with famous stores like Bunnings in Australia or stores that cater to the same diverse products that are not only found in big cities, but also in regional areas where it is accessible to everyone.
Recently, Mr. D.I.Y. opened its latest store in Baganga in Davao Oriental on February 29, 2024. It’s the first of the well-known brands following 7-Eleven that opened a couple of years earlier, and local pharmacy giant Mercury Drug is set to open its branch within the municipal town of Baganga. The economy is slowly booming in this part of the Davao Region, where most locals have access only to generic “Mom-and-Pop Stores” or small independent businesses operated by family members, serving a town or local community and typically having a single location.
Clearly, the municipal town of Baganga needed something that big cities have, and Mr. D.I.Y. is one of them, bringing its high-quality products and services that are affordable to everyone. The latest and only store is located just a few kilometers away from Baganga, and you will never miss the two-story building that few locals have visited, as most of them are using tricycles, motorcycles, and Kei trucks or vans.
Inside the Store
There are too many things to see inside Mr. D.I.Y., ranging from household items to automotive parts for your vehicle. There is also a section for your craft needs for arts, and it even offers school supplies that no local store has. There’s so much to take in if you have not ventured out to the big cities with your limited perspective of what you only know can ‘blow your mind.’
The store just recently opened with loud music, and people were in and out of the store. We get to visit it when the ‘hype’ was slowly taking the air out, to have the chance to browse their products and see what they have to offer.
Of course, I have to check the toy section and other interesting things, despite some of them not being what you’d expect for someone who is used to premium collectibles that they don’t carry. Because they have to cater to a diverse market, the products they have must be offered to those who can afford them, mostly to children.
Electronics and More
Mr. D.I.Y. also offers products for your mobile phones, like battery chargers, headphones, ear pods, and other things related to your electronic gadgets. They even have phone cases and protective covers for your phone’s LCD. They have tools for them if you are savvy in fixing them.
It is called Mr. D.I.Y., short for Do It Yourself, as they offer these products for you to use in your everyday life. Since most in this region may own a garden, they have a diverse selection for you to see, from artificial plants for indoor use. It’s really A LOT to take in if you have not been to a store like this one.
Of course, competition is going to be a challenge for the local stores in the area. But what they can do is learn from this store how to even the playing field in offering the same diverse products at an affordable cost without cutting down the quality. Also, to keep Mr. D.I.Y. on top of the game, they should consistently stock some in-demand products that are not available or being offered by local stores.
