Ted Lasso | "Carol the Bells"

There’s something optimistically funny about Christmas themed episodes on television, but it’s only August and the fourth episode of “Ted Lasso.” Though given the setting and timeline of the second season picks up in the middle of the new season it makes sense that this episode arrives with a different opening tag.

Most of the TV Series that features a "Christmas Episode" airs it's shows around Thanks Giving, but this one came out right at the gate with this as a surprise.

The opening sequence was originally feature the blue seats, where the Richmond FC plays is replaced with Christmas green, and at the same time it’s not Ted in a live action shot that seats in one of the chairs but a stop-motion animation featuring the main characters that joins him with a Holiday themed version of the song.

For this season, the theme shifts gears to how the team bonds as a family with a lot of moving parts that starts with Ted down to the team and ownership how their lives intertwined and deals with everyday life.

An interesting look on those ‘moving parts’ gets highlighted, and focuses on how the team spends their Holiday Season and see how the family theme comes in to play. Taking the focus away from football and shifts gears to the individual lives of the featured characters in the opening montage gives you an idea.

There are three storylines breaks from the opening scene as the coaches with Keeley discuss on what they’ll be doing during the Holidays. Ted opted to spend Christmas zoom calls with his son unboxing presents, while Higgins opens his yearly tradition to the foreign players who won’t be home for Christmas. Keeley, on the other hand reveals her surprise for Roy Kent, and Rebecca shares that she will be spending hobnobbing with Elton John and her other celebrity friends.

While the rest of the characters featuring Jamie Tartt, Coach Beard, and Nathan Shelley takes for this episode, the rest are part of the overarching stories in the end (more of this below)

Sounds like a Plan

As mentioned there are four storylines that breaks into a series of narratives relating to the main characters and how it was hilariously delivered with a dash of panache. This is probably one of the best episodes for this season despite being its fourth entry. But here are some summaries that make this episode an interestingly fun to re-watch.

Keeley Sexy Surprise Gone Wrong

At the start of the episode Keeley had gossiped her way to the coaches and Rebecca her Holiday plans for Roy Kent after coming home from work, but turns it becomes evident they’re not going to spend their Sexy Christmas when Roy’s niece, Phoebe visiting , feeling insecure after boy teased her at school with bad breath. Roy said he will help rectify it with Keeley and give them each 1000 Pounds if they can’t find a dentist to fix the problem and at the same time will talk to the boy who teased her.

Higgins Overwhelming Visitors

Every year Higgins has opened his doors to the team for those who won’t be home for the Holidays and claims he only gets one or two players spending with them. But this year was something of an overwhelming surprise, almost the whole team come to visit that started with a handful that includes the Nigerians’ Sam, Isaac, and Bumbercatch. It plays to the hilarity and quite what you usually see in hosting Christmas dinners. Besides not only the visitors come in droves they also brought their Christmas tradition from their countries, which they actually ran out of tables and chairs.

Last Minute Gift-Giving

Ted would have the best time spending video calls with his son and ex-wife, but was dejected when his left and played the drone he sent as a gift. In some way Rebecca makes a visit to Ted and invite him in a last minute gift-giving around town, which reveals her yearly tradition with hilarious segments.

Towards the end of the episode Roy and Keeley found the dentist who helped with Phoebe’s Halitosis, which reveals the Antihistamine that she takes for her cat allergies was the culprit. Wrapping up with Rebecca and Ted singing carols across Higgins’ place as the players and the rest celebrate.

Overall this might be an early praise, but this is one of the best episodes from the series despite only on its second season. Literally a heartwarming episode deserves another spotlight to catch it exclusively on Apple TV as the way it should be.
